With you or without, a spider's life will go on

This is for all those people who think the world revolves around them.

Actually, this is old news but for the sake of prosperity (to provide for the common defense and promote the general welfare...), I will act as if it's current.

On Tuesday, I noticed a cobweb on my driver's-side mirror. Nothing odd about that, we get a lot of spiders round these parts and they are very adventurous and will build a web in all manner of places. (I was once almost blocked in my house by a giant garden orb spider that spent the night building a web across my porch. That's what you get for being idle.) I thought no more of it because I realized that once I drove to work, the web would be destroyed.

Well, come Wednesday, as I'm leaving work to go home, I see the web is still there. What magic is this? wonders I. Damn strong stuff. OK, so Thursday morning, as I am driving to work, I look in my mirror to change lanes and what do I see? A wee spider sitting inside the mirror casing, just sitting there and enjoying the ride! Huh. OK. Then, when I left work that evening, I looked inside and sure enough, he was still sitting in there.

I don't know how long he's been living in there, but he came out whenever I got home, rebuilt his web, and made sure to crawl inside the mirror casing when I left in the morning. I am not kidding. He was very careful to build his web below the window, which moved up and down, obviously, so he was not a stupid spider.

Back to present time: I don't remember how long he lasted in there, maybe four or five days. I was going somewhere on Saturday with Marty and I didn't want to take my car because he was still living in there and I knew if I took the freeway, he was done for. So when Marty arrived at my house, I showed her the impossible spider and discovered it had brought a friend over! There were now two spiders on the web beside my mirror. Marty misunderstood what I was doing and immediately undertook the safe and humane transport of the original thrill-seeker to a nearby hedge before I could get a picture, but after much swearing I did manage to get a photo of the friend.
