Midnight to LAX and back.

I've been laying low of late and on my way back down the freeway, I decided to overshoot my exit and take streets back so I could just meander and listen to Joy Division.

On my way back, I stopped at Randy's Donuts. It's open 24 hours and has a drive through.

It took almost twenty minutes for me to buy a chocolate glazed but no one honked or got loud or anything. Everyone seemed perfectly willing to wait in their cars forever to buy a 70 cents donut instead of just parking and going to the walk up window, me included. The gas station across the street was only $2.99 for regular unleaded, it was too bad I'd gotten gasoline earlier. That part of Manchester is fantastic, it's like international waters. Just in that little stretch, there was a gun range, a tattoo parlor (still open), an huge adult book and video store (still open) and a Denny's.

Further down, I got swept up in yet another checkpoint. This was the largest one I've been dragged into, there were at least thirty police type people. The one fella told me it was a DUI checkpoint but lit up my car like he expected to see more people inside. Up on the sidewalk was an entire processing station with more police type people. I remarked to the policeman while he was checking my license (and questioning me), that there sure were a lot of people out, and he told me "You won't believe how many we've already caught" but he didn't elaborate. I didn't see what happened to the car that had been ahead of me. It realized too late that there was a checkpoint and had panicked and pulled over and stopped and tried to back out. Like that wouldn't arouse suspicion. I drove around him to get through.
