Stepping in and out of the crooked, crooked beat.

Today I found out that I can't do something as simple as drive to the park, a park I had passed a million times, thinking every time "I need to go there and park and walk around and see what they got." Today was that day and I got into my car and drove and drove and by the time I was in El Segundo, I realized that I had somehow missed it and that I well and truly had no idea where it actually was or what name it went by so I couldn't just look it up. It's somewhere between here and El Segundo, that much I can tell you. Although where exactly, well, huh. It's not off Sepulveda or Sawtelle. I think it's in Culver City and I think it's on the way to Home Depot except I don't think I have ever driven to Home Depot the same way twice so now I've managed to confuse myself. Dang.

Anyway, there I was, driving along wondering what I was doing so I decided to just go to Mar Vista Park, which I'd never been to either but they have tennis courts so I figured they had some grassy area. It's a nice little park, in addition to the tennis, they had baseball and soccer fields so it's pretty big. A lot of families were out and about and it's right in a residential area so the local homeless population was limited to a couple of local drunks that were easy to avoid. [What the hell is going on right now? It sounds like someone's stacking paint buckets in the alley over here, what the hell? Ope, never mind, I just recognized my neighbor's voice saying "ow" so it's probably best I not go and look.]

Anyway, if I am out to take photographs, I pack everything I think I'm going to need and extra stuff that I bring along in case I decide later that I need it. I overpack. Which is stupid because it's best to travel light so it's easier to keep an eye on your gear. What I've learned so far is that local homeless populations won't bother you if you just stay away from them and not use them as props or anything. You do, however, need to avoid junkies at all costs, it's better to just leave immediately. White people are a pain in the ass because they have no decorum and will stand right next to you and stare and take pics on their cellphone or talk loudly. They're also more passive-aggressive so they'll stand behind you and talk about you loudly but if you turn around to speak to them, they'll scurry off like rats. I prefer my own people since they'll only watch from a distance with mild interest, men and women, and won't stay long. They might come back later with some children, but again, only from a distance and they won't ask questions.

That's who was at Mar Vista Park, so even though I was clearly doing something deviant, which included laying flat on my face in wet grass, no one said anything to me or stuck around to watch. Also, the best places with wide open spaces with grass and plain backgrounds and little population are parks, churches and government buildings on the weekends. Just FYI. My biggest problem is heading our early enough to catch the light.

I was also very happy because I'd gone to Target, I think it was, and found a mangled box of the army men LEGO set, which, I must say, is a lot of bang for $11. There's a ton of parts and no crappy cheater one-piece shells! Yay!

Also, I've become obsessed with Jane and the Dragon. I want to see every episode and I don't know why. They're not well written and the CGI kinda creeps me out. I think there's something in Canadian cartoons that subliminally forces me to watch them. That's the only way I can explain this and also why I watched every single episode of Highlander: The Animated Series.

Also also: I'm about to drink valerian root tea for the first time in my life so if I have an allergic reaction and die or sleep so soundly that I roll over onto my face and asphyxiate myself and die, please evacuate the cats and burn everything else like in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, thanks.
